I left Toulouse to head for Bayonne, but I broke the journey in Pau, a city with a Swedish connection. It was here where Charles XIV, the first of the Bernadotte kings was born in 1776.

Leaving the station, I saw this view. The railway station is down by the river, but the city is on a hill above the river, and there is a short free funicular that takes people up and down the hill every third minute.
